Exemplification The word “social” doesn’t often come to mind when many people think of video games. Most people immediately jump in their minds to a scene of a pimpled antisocial nerd hunched over a console in the dark. Despite this stereotype, I will profess League of Legends is, by far, the most social video game I have ever played. League (short for League of Legends, and what I and my friends mostly refer to it as,) is the antithesis of solitary play, as although it can be played without friends, (a player can be matched randomly with players that match his or her skill level) it still forces a player to collaborate. The original term tilting comes from poker. In that game, it is very important to keep one’s cool in order to not tip off an opponent. Saying that a player was on tilt indicated that they were giving away game details due to their facial expressions. A player would go on tilt by becoming frustrated, or worse angry, which took focus away from a crucial skill in a game. The term carried over into the highly mental activity of gaming, where a player’s anger sometimes causes them to make mistakes they normally wouldn’t make without being on tilt. Gamers tend to be easily frustrated, especially because of unpleasant or rude teammates or opponents, or because of random game elements; therefore the term seemed to carry over particularly well. Tilting is now a common term used to help players keep their cool by explaining that their frustrations make the game worse for them. Not all contexts use tilting, but now there will be fewer people who gawk at a gamer saying “I’m tilted” in a real world
