While walking to my car after work last Monday, I came upon someone who exposed me to the social safety net that is there when all else fails. It is the safety net that takes on everyone. It is not sustained by any one agency or institution but is instead a network of organizations that are forced to accept all that come through its doors. The two institutions that I observed last Monday were the jail and the emergency room. I have replaced the individual’s real name with an alias in order to protect his privacy. To be clear, the forthcoming recollection of events that transpired that night are from my perspective and do not reflect the opinion of anyone else, unless otherwise noted.
