Social Responsibility In America Essay

As dissatisfaction levels rise in America, Americans are searching for ways to fix the current situation. Solutions focus mainly on modifying the political system, however I believe that individual social responsibility may lead to a greater impact on overall satisfaction and happiness. My research would focus on answering four questions: First, what is it to be responsible? Second, What is one responsible for? Third, do those who exhibit more responsibility enjoy an elevated level of happiness compared to that of their less responsible counterparts? And finally, how can a culture of social responsibility be fostered among the rising generation?
The impact could be incredible. For instance, according to the U.S. Census, only 41% of custodial parents with a child support agreement regularly receive the amount owed to them. Single parents have a difficult job, and not having child support can augment the issue, and drastically affect the life of the child. A team of philosophy and social science students would explore the first two questions, coming up with a strong definition of social responsibility as well as categorizing the different aspects of responsibility. Their research could be conducted via surveys, philosophical discussions, collaboration with experts, or any other valid method. The group could then begin to work with STEM majors to explore the relationship between responsibility in the aforementioned categories and levels of happiness (either self-reported or analyzed with scientific data). Finally, students from all disciplines could work together to formulate a plan to apply the findings of the group to a small part of society, and test the effects thereof.
