Fundamental Attribution Error In Social Psychology

Superior Essays
In social psychology, fundamental attribution error is described as the tendency of people to attribute the behaviors of others to internal factors --such as character, personality, and intent-- rather than resulting from external factors and/or circumstance (Schwarz, 2014). This contrasts with an individual 's self-perception, which accounts for all readily available knowledge of personal circumstance, when evaluating personal behavior. Fundamental attribution error is an intensely common psychological phenomenon, and has rightly earned itself the ‘fundamental’ title. There are several theories as to the causes of fundamental attribution error, all of which are related to information incompleteness. The frequency of fundamental attribution …show more content…
Without omniscience, causality eventually must be determined by a certain degree of assumption (Kahneman, 2011). Which, by the limits of human imagination, is prone to error. To overcome fundamental attribution error, it is important to be conscious of personal ignorance, and have to maintain a healthy curiosity, whilst also incorporating the two step process (Kahneman, 2011). Through the questioning and investigation of assumptions, fundamental attribution errors can be reduced and people can create for themselves a more accurate understanding of reality.
Fundamental attribution errors are so commonplace that they represent an essential component of storytelling. For example, in situational comedies, fundamental attribution errors are used to create absurd conflicts resulting from the misunderstanding of key characters. In a modern comedic writing, Curb Your Enthusiasm is a great example, in which Larry David is constantly portrayed as misunderstood. The viewer is humored by Larry’s constant struggle to explain the circumstances behind his

I’ve witnessed numerous examples of this. One very telling example just happened recently. About a week ago, I went to visit a couple friends of mine, Munenyasha and Lerato, at their apartment. Munenyasha and Lerato are close friends and live as roommates. Upon arriving at their apartment, only Lerato was home and Munenyasha became very frustrated that Lerato had not been replying to her text messages and had left unclean dishes on the kitchen counter. Munenyasha was disappointed, and accused Lerato of being lazy and rude. Having known Lerato for quite some time, I knew her to be hardworking and polite -- so there must have been a good reason for why she had not responded to the texts and why she had left dishes out on the counter. As it turns out, Lerato’s co-worker had called in sick from her workplace, & she had been asked to fill in. Because Lerato was called into work on such short notice, she did not have enough time to clean dishes --leaving them on the counter—neither did she have time to respond to Munenyashas’ text

“Bugs in our reasoning” have three distinguished characteristics. First, they result in poor choices, inaccurate perceptions, or faulty memories. Second, they are so easy and natural to make we don’t realize they are happening. Third, as a result of their naturalness, it is difficult to avoid the bugs but if you learn to recognize them and know how to think critically, these errors can be reduced. When examining the “we prefer stories to statistics” bias, it is easy to see how the characteristics of the “bugs in our reasoning” relate to the bias.…

”(141) uses literary devices to emphasize the importance of preparing food and the necessity of a perfectly managed team. The fact that Aunt Tam can afford an expensive team of servants for the banquet is another expression of her wealth. The “conductor” simile compares food preparation to an orchestra which portrays the level of effort and planning that has to go into food preparations and emphasizes the importance of community. Huong’s word choice in the sentence is critical because it creates contrast between chaos and order: “feverish activity’’ and “well ordered’’ are phrases used to display this disparity. The narrative also displays how characters who are ranked highly in the social hierarchy value food differently.…

“True, we have evolved to be social animals with both positive and negative traits, demonstrating strong tendencies for cooperation and altruism as well as conflict and violence” (Banaji and Greenwald 124). This quote is derived from Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good People, and gives insight to the larger meaning of the text. There are many lessons that one can take from this book including that humans live in a world full of mindbugs, which can be described as “ingrained habits of thought that lead to errors in how we perceive, remember, reason, and make decisions” (Banaji and Greenwald 4). One can also learn that we live in a world of categories, and these categories create ingroups and outgroups. Going even further, these ingroups and outgroups create stereotyping between opposing groups.…

To begin, I want to say I find this course insightful. Through the weeks, I have come to accept that everyone has unconscious bias, but also, that it is not something to be ashamed of, if anything, it is something to learn from. Before this class, I was not sure how to articulate my experiences on cultural differences. Also, I did not have a good grasp on culture and how it affects us all differently. I have learned to recognize that I have my own ethnocentrism, that it is okay to feel proud of my own culture in the sense that, maybe there are other ways to do things, but I like my way better because that is the way I am accustomed to.…

Cognitive bias is a limitation in objective thinking that is caused by the tendency for the human brain to perceive information through a filter of personal experience and preferences. Cognitive biases are often a result of an attempt to simplify information processing. Psychologists Daniel Kahneman, Paul Slovic, and Amos Tversky introduced the concept of psychological bias in the early 1970s. They published their findings in their 1982 book, "Judgment Under Uncertainty."…

In “Why This? Why Anything?” Derek Parfit provides his demonstration of the fallibility of providing causal answers for the creation of the universe. In light of the fallibility of causal answers, Parfit seeks to incorporate his response to the creation of the universe with the use of non-causal answers which explains something’s existence in virtue of its properties, rather than attempting to follow an infinite chain of reasoning. While Parfit adequately demonstrates an inability to conform our reasoning to causal interactions for the creation and nature of the universe, his understanding of non-causal answers for the nature of the universe provides little insight into the questions he proposes and provides merely a factual understanding, rather than an explanatory one.…
