If literature doesn’t matter then why are “38% of employers [complaining] that local schools inadequately taught reading comprehension” (2)? It is astonishing to have to explain the obscene amount of money employers are investing to have people taught to read or to properly write for that matter (Gioia). If literature isn’t such a big deal then why are “employers now ranking reading and writing as top deficiencies in new hires” (Burriesci 2)? If literature did not matter so then it would not be crucial in just about every workforce there is. Literature does so much more than inspire, Prose wrote, “those who might have supposed that one purpose of fiction was to deploy the power of language to connect us, directly and intimately, with the hearts and souls of others, will be disappointed to learn that the whole point is to make us examine ourselves” (5). Literature is intended for more than just reading, it is about reflecting on not only ourselves but our environment, community, and social
