Social prejudices is a huge problem. This type of inequality stems from biases and discrimination and inhibits some people from the equal opportunities others are born with. This creates an unfair gap in society and prevents some people from reaching their fullest potential
My desire to take on social prejudices stems from when i was a little girl playing with dolls. Due to the california sun I was the darkest girl in my class. Because of this I was convinced I was black or Indian. So whenever my parents would take me to the store I gravitated towards dolls of all cultures. I believe this fear to be the main causation of social prejudices. Another cause is the social stigmas taught at home. Most times parents do not even realize how much they are influencing their kids. Understanding the roots of this ethical dilemma is crucial when looking at how to alleviate this problem.
Many people are ignorant to how big of a problem these prejudices are. People who experience prejudices are held back from reaching their fullest potential economically and socially. Biases also create tensions, which leads to violence. Too many people are dying because of race, gender, and sexual orientation.
There are many steps that need to be put in place in order to lessen these prejudices. An important step is educating society. Schools should educate children starting at an early age about other cultures. Such as an cultural appreciation class. Another thing influencing society is the media. Often times the media portrays european features to be the most desired. An example would be the white washing or lighting or darker peoples skin for magazines. The media knowingly or not creates rifts to what real beauty is. I think that social media and the internet would be a powerful platform for educating children, teens, and even adults about other
