Essay On Sexual Double Standard

In the beginning of exploring my social phenomenon that is known as the sexual double standard. The social phenomenon that I can say I took apart in at a young age. Knowing that I was in a group that was constructed off of this social phenomenon is one of the reasons I decided to learn more about it. The fact that I grew up believing in the double standard, and was part of the reason why it became a social phenomenon. I felt guilty when I finally became aware of the issue in high school when a good friend of mine called me out for calling someone a “slut”. To me I didn’t mean it in a demeaning matter, but once she explained to me how it tossed around in a horrible away towards women to degrade them I stopped. I was blown away by the results. Particularly reading Dr. Kreager research on the social phenomenon, and how race and ethnicity played a factor on the words being used. Before the research, I knew of the effect that it had on society but I was aware of why it happened. Learning that it all occurs based on the location one grows up, such as in a low-income household versus a privileged one. While reading more about Dr. Kreager’s work I was surprised by the results. That female that had a lot of sexual partners saw none too little change to peer acceptance. With males, on the other hand, males that had multiple sexual partners were more accepted by their male peers but shun by their female peers. Another result being that male who have not participated in sexual relations saw a low amount of peer acceptance. These results provided evidence for the sexual double standard, not only enforced it but proved it to be right. Proving that males with multiple sexual partners were indeed living up to the “stud” persona and leaving the males who did participate in the actions behind with no peer
