Social Perspective Analysis

In this chapter what stuck out most to me was the social perspective. It seems like people engage in behavior based on feelings or what we would like to partake in. Now when we look at how social experiences and social surroundings really affect what behaviors we tend to have. We see that it’s not just a personal feeling or reaction it really is an effect of what has happened around us or what society is doing around us. After reading about this specific topic in chapter one and then discussing the term it class, it really means to personally to me that behaviors we experience or behaviors we choose to engage in has a lot of effect on what is happening around us socially. The experiences and behaviors are not merely based on our own personal …show more content…
My son plays on a travelling basketball team. This weekend we were out of town to a tournament in Oklahoma City, OK. Next to our hotel was a very nice restaurant so we all chose to go there to eat dinner. Now on this team we have a lot of inner city kids from Springfield, MO as well as some more experienced families you could say. Some of these families have not really gone to what we would call ‘nice restaurants’. As we were ordering our food, my husband and I have been to nice restaurants before so we were well aware of the portion size and price. It seems the higher priced food becomes then the less that given in portions. One of the families had ordered their food and when the food finally came out, they were not happy. They told the waiter hell no I’m not paying ten dollars for that small of a plate are you serious. They ended up raising a big scene how it was such a small portion for the price that was being charged. So this family left the restaurant, went down the road, came back and showed everyone at our tables how much food they ended up receiving for the same amount of price. Now when I think back to the social surroundings I have been in the past, my husband and I were not surprised at all. It made me sit there and think how if our social surroundings had only ever been around lower priced food and huge portions, it would be such a change to have small portion for an expensive price. It really opened up my eyes to what exactly social perspective played in this. It all had to deal with what social experience and surroundings each of the families had engaged in that made an effect on that meal that

As I reflect back on this class, I realize that is has positively impacted my life in a way that I never thought it would have. I have learned more about myself during this class, than I have in any other class to date. In chapter 1 the parts I like were, understanding the culture of higher education, and becoming an active learner. These parts were significant because it taught me that in order to understand college, I had to learn what it was.…

The Gourmet Problem Reading “Today’s Special” by David Sedaris made me realize that I not only agree with his disdain of gourmet food and its seeming takeover of normal restaurants with normal food but also that I am a food snob. First of all, when I order a traditional meal of meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and green beans, I expect the meatloaf not to be mixed with prunes and drowning in a peach sauce accompanied by mashed potatoes made with cauliflower –where’s the potatoes?- and vanilla green bean amandine. Then I realized that while others are snobbish about ‘normal, boring food’, I am a reverse food snob. Food does not have to be bland…

In the articles, "Gap in Diet Quality Between Wealthiest and Poorest Americans Doubles," by Tracie McMillan and, "Is Junk Food Really Cheaper," by Mark Bittman we perceive how the food industry brings down lower class. The high society has more advantageous nourishments accessible to them due to their economic situation. In the article "Gap in Diet Quality," the author asserts that "the eating methodologies of low-pay Americans have declined in the previous decade". Then again wealthier individuals have access to better quality food.…

Moreover, the learning perspective insists on the environment as a shaper of learning and behavior and not the personal characteristics as cited by Carver& Scheier (58). The environment must be reinforced for a particular desired behavior to continue. In this case therefore the environment that is the corporation did not elicit the desired behavior that would have made Deborah to remain interested in doing research. The environment was undesirable thus extinguishing the behavior.…

Important Points Paper In this chapter the two points that I found important were symbolic interactionism and social integration. Symbolic integration is important because without it there would be no meaning to anything we do. On one side there would be no forms of learning, no titles for anything, and no way to correlate patterns or relationships. On the other side of things there would be no social status or war we would just be like our ancestors in the early days of humankind going off of instinct.…

Service Paper First of all the full service dining restaurant I choose to dine at was Olive Garden in Holly Springs with my family. When we ate dinner there it was a Friday night around seven pm it was pretty busy when we walked in and there were people sitting inside and outside waiting for their names to be called. The service started out great; there were three hostesses standing behind the host counter and they were all wearing black shirts and pants as their uniforms. They all had smiles on their faces and waited patiently to greet who ever walked through the doors. Each host made eye contact and welcomed us as we walked up by saying “welcome to Olive Garden how are you all this evening?”…

“Life Course Perspective (LCP) attempts to bridge structural or societal level and individual psychological level factors that affect human development. (Hooyman, 150)” “LCP states that in order to make sense of old age we need to understand the entire life history (Madjaroff, 2015).” From the moment we are born individuals go through countless memories and experiences that shape who we are and what defines us. The environment that we live in and the values of the people that we are surrounded by all come together and make us who we are.…

There was a time when I use to live in my home town up north, when my friend and I were catching the train to go shopping. We were sitting at the train station waiting for the train to arrive, when we saw a man to the left of us making unusual movements while he waited for the train as well. The man was dressed in long khaki colored pants leather shoes and a long sleeve button up shirt. It was the summer time then and that day it was 109 degrees exactly. The man also had a very long, long sleeved trench coat on and a hat as well, while I am aware of different cultures and people dress differently, it was the man actions that came across abnormal to me.…

Minimum Wage Controversy In America, working is supposed to keep individuals out of poverty, not place them in it. With current minimum wage at nine dollars an hour, families are struggling to live an optimal life. The people who are employed under minimum wage are struggling to pay their bills, buy goods for themselves, and even support a family. Minimum wage in the bay area is insufficient due to the high cost of living and therefore should be increased.…

Growing up in an environment that mostly eats meals at home, I was hardly introduced to restaurants. As a result, of mostly eating meals at home, restaurants never really satisfied my taste buds, due to the fact that my mom’s home cooked meals are twice as delicious. Moreover, it was later on in life when I started eating at restaurants, in which have given me a lot of wonderful memories I will never forget. Despite, not eating out a lot when I was younger it has become part of my life style ever since I have started working and attending college. With this in mind, Cheba Hut, Denny’s, and Pizza Mia will always be 3 of my favorite places to stuff my face with no regrets.…

Unpacking my personal worldview is something that seems, for me, a task that is overwhelming and exciting. Sire (2009) provides that "A worldview (or vision of life) is a framework or set of fundamental beliefs through which we view the world and our calling and future in it (Location 115). " Schultz and Swezey (2013) reference Sire's work as well summarizing that "worldview is not strictly about information, beliefs, or knowledge, but must entail ‘‘heart-orientation’’ and behavior as well (p. 231). " The foundation of my worldview that is overly apparent to me is a Christian worldview based on biblical principles that God is the creator of all, God is good and that I am a unique creation of God. I know I have a decidedly biblical Christian…

It touches on so many different categories such as: social class and inequality, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, culture and socialization, deviance and criminality, and global dynamics. The sociological imagination will vary from each individual as he or she has their own personal experiences throughout their life course even if two people are living what seems like the same exact lifestyle. I think this ability to relate personal troubles to social issues is a complex skill and is not fully developed until later on in life and with that being said I do not think everyone reaches the capacity in their minds to develop this skill unless they are open-minded. As stated before I think this particular skill is a real eye-opener for those who do reach the level to obtain it. Before taking this class I did not view my own personal troubles the way I do now.…
