Intimacy and self-disclosure are two concepts that are closely related as mentioned in the Social Penetration Theory. The theory states that as relationships develop over time, they penetrate deeper and deeper into private and personal matters, exposing vulnerability, thus trust must be developed along the way.
According to this research journal made in 2012 titled “Self-Disclosure Among Bloggers: Re-Examination of Social Penetration Theory” by Tang and Wang, they state that “Generally, bloggers express more (both in depth and width) to best friends rather than to parents and online audiences” (p.4). In my personal experience, I know that when I first met my best friend who I shall call Jake in this instance, I was completely nervous to even talk about anything asides from school related topics and was not sure if we would even be interested in the same types of things. I only knew about Jake from my other friend who at the time, wanted us to meet so that we could all hang out together. At first, I thought that I would be able to talk about anything with Jake just like my other friend but I found it hard since I didn’t really know much about him and I did not want to pry too much when we first met. However, one day after school my friend decided that Jake and I should join an afterschool club with him that we would all be interested in joining, a technology club. And it was through this after school activity that I slowly got to know more things about Jake and that I could not begin to open more topics of discussion to talk with him about such as what were his favorite book series, what his favorite show was, or what was his favorite video game. As we all spent more time together I realized that we had more in common than I had originally thought, which ties directly in what the Social Penetration Theory is all about. From being shy and nervous when talking to a stranger, it became something where I could now tell Jake whatever I was feeling and not think twice about the topic of
