Ask an average teenager what they know about sexual assault, and they may refer to “locker room talk” or dramatized rape scenes in movies. It is misconceptions like these that can drive a victim further into seclusion, because their situation is so unknown to the average person, leaving them in solitary. In the United States alone, one in five women and one in seventy-five men will be raped at some point throughout their lifetime, yet only 37% of these incidents are reported to authorities (Department of Justice 1). There are many factors that contribute to this, but one major reason this occurs is that victims feel as if they are on one's own and lack someone to assist them in their time of need.…

This paper examines four current sociological phenomena and their resulting theories, offering possible explanations for the increasing problem of minority abuse by law enforcement. Although there are many other factors I have chosen to focus on racism (ACLU, 2015), militarization of the police force, (Jenkins, 2014) the hiring of veterans by law enforcement agencies (Jenkins, 2014) and a sociological phenomenon known as “the other” (Franzoi, 2012). Two of these seem to play a larger part in the problem as the other two forces are not recent developments and therefore less likely to be causative of a more recent issue.…

Sexual assault is continuing to be a problem on college campuses across the United States. One in five women will be sexually assaulted on a college campus each year, however only 5% of the instances will be reported (The Realities of Sexual Abuse 2009). Many students who commit a sexual assault crime are allowed to stay on campuses, in the same general area as their victim with very minimal punishments placed upon them (Kingkade 2014). Sexual assault causes extreme physical and mental harm to the victims, and colleges are doing less and less to help them. Because of colleges allowing students found guilty of sexual assault to stay on campus, victims of rape often feel unsafe going to authorities.…

Rape is a silent epidemic amongst many contradicting topics. I say silent because there are a high number of rapes compared to the very low number of reports. Something so obvious can also be oblivious to many especially when an individual isn’t aware that even they can become a victim of sexual assault. It’s so easy to think this way when you or anyone you know hasn’t come face to face with sexual assault. Many of these individuals are college students especially those on or near college campuses that are constantly on the go to attend class, parties, extracurricular activities etc.…
