Does Caldwell County lack in social options for teens? Do our teens have to go to different counties for fun? Are we forcing more kids to be antisocial because there are not enough opportunities in their own county? These are just a few questions that can be asked in relation to social options for teens in Caldwell County. My grandparents had very few social options compared to our generation but they had their own place for teens to socialize. The people I know from the counties surrounding Caldwell have an abundance of social options compared to the lackluster options of Caldwell County. How big of an effect does money have in the social options here in Caldwell County? The Caldwell County median income per family is $47,892 while the average …show more content…
There are a decent amount of options but we are lacking certain big name restaurants such as Chick-fil-A, Panera, and Red Lobster. Three out of the seven people I interviewed told me that they enjoy eating at Chick-fil-A. If they want food from any of these restaurants they must make a special trip which ends up costing time and money according to Ann Bollinger, Ryder Martin and Matt Reitzel. Only one of my interviewees said that their favorite fast food place, as a teen, was Hardee's. Caldwell County does offer several mainstream food chains such as McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and Taco Bell but it lacks in variety. There is currently one Taco Bell in Caldwell County and at least three of these fast food chains are located in Catawba County. The number of fast food restaurants in Caldwell County in 2007 was 7.31 per 10,000 population. The numbers indicate Caldwell has more per 10,000 than the 7.1 average for the rest of North Carolina (City Data). These facts may be misleading because Caldwell has a smaller population than other counties such as Catawba and Burke County. There are slightly fewer restaurants per 10,000 people in the rest of North Carolina but they have a greater population and are closer in proximity to more restaurants. The number of full service restaurants are vastly different here rather than the rest of North Carolina. Caldwell County has 4.91 full service restaurants per 10,000 while North Carolina has 7.57 per …show more content…
Janette loved going to watch movies for only a quarter for admission and quoted “I used to go to the balcony with my boyfriend, don’t tell your Papa.” Clay enjoyed going to the movies as a teenager. He went to the place he spoke highly of, the Dome Drive-in. As he was reminiscing of his younger days he said “we always, always went to the Dome Drive-in after football games on Friday nights, everybody was going to be there.” Carmike theater is a popular feature in Catawba County, a good place to go with your friends and/or girlfriend (Matt). Even though it is a much longer drive than his local theater the Big D draws people even from Burke County (Thomas). Phillip is probably the most interested in the Carmike Theater, he has been anxiously waiting for some time now for the new Star Wars movie. While he will complain about the price he goes back to Carmike over and over again to watch mostly action packed movies. The only remaining movie theater in Caldwell County shut down leaving moviegoers no options but to take the long journey either to Catawba or Burke

In Broken Heartland, Osha Gray Davidson argues the “farm crisis” and the pain it brought to communities in Iowa was only part of a longer decline of rural America brought about by failed governmental policy and the rise of industrial agriculture, which is turning once prosperous small towns into what he terms as “rural ghettos.” He argues that without a substantial course correction rural America will continue to decline and the residents of these rural ghettos, “bitter, desperate, and cut off from America’s cities” will increasingly turn to hate groups. Though Davidson writes as a journalist not as trained historian, Broken Heartland is an important historical work shining a light on growing problems in rural communities and the economic…

A study conducted by Miller, Rainie, Purcell, Mitchell, & Rosenstiel (2012), for the Pew Research Center, evaluated different community types—including urban, suburban, small town and rural communities—on various measures, including education levels, income levels and racial and ethnic makeup of their populations. What was found in regard to the differences between these communities was that suburban areas, in comparison to urban areas, have higher income and education levels.
