Social Observation
By observing a class at Fontbonne University, there was a variety of observable information that was gathered during the observation. I observed an introduction to statistics course and it was seventy-five-minute meeting and observation occurred on Monday, September 12. I went into the class a few minutes before the class started and picked a seat in the back of the classroom. The classroom was set up with a podium for the teacher at the front of the classroom with a projector. The professor handed out note pages to the students in the front to pass back to all of the students. The professor wrote on a tablet during the class and the notes were projected onto the projector for the students to be able to see. The rest of classroom

The class had mostly Caucasian females in the late teens or early 20’s with eleven people falling into this category. The next largest group was Caucasian males in the same age range which made up the next group with seven students. The next group fascinated me as an observer. There were six middle aged, African American women in my class between the ages of 30 and 55. The next group was one Middle Eastern male approximately 20-25 years old. This shows that Fontbonne does have some diversity, but not amazingly diverse. The people in the class were under the age of 25 for the most part, but there were some outliers in an older age group that follows with the idea that older students are returning to school to finish their …show more content…
As I mentioned earlier, the professor would work on the first two problems then the students would work out the remaining problems on their own. The students seemed to work actively and pay attention when the professor was working on the first problem, but then the students seemed to get distracted or work on other work until the professor started to walk around and see how the students are doing on their problems. Some of the students kept paying attention and actively asked questions throughout the class period, while others dosed off or worked on other assignments. The general information I can gather from the patterns I observed from the students is that these students do not take the class incredibly seriously in that they did not devote their entire focus into the

The setting I observed was Walmart. I decided to go here because there are usually a large amount of people and a lot of different backgrounds with different personalities. The social setting of Walmart would be the lower and middle class income families. The expectations of this environment would be to be completely clothed with shoes. Most people would expect for others to just look presentable because there are young children and elderly old-fashioned folks.…

Journal 5 “I Just Want To Be Average” is the Essay I most identify with. Wanting to fit in and be part of a group. Also, how the school and school system can have a large influence on a student’s life. I seem to have the analogous issues with the classroom as Mike Rose does. How he had a hard time concentrating on and trying to enjoy the material being taught.…

The school has one hundred and seventy-five children, from grades kindergarten through third (School Directory, 2015). Forty-six percent of the school is made up of Caucasian students. The student to teacher ratio is 14 to one (School Directory, 2015). The diversity in the school was neat to see. The elementary I attended was ninety percent white, so it was nice to see all the students from different backgrounds playing together.…

    School Hat Observation

Observations: Students were allowed to wear a hat to class if they had paid a dollar. Usually this is not allowed in class. They seemed pretty excited over allowed to wear a hat in the classroom. When the students finally settled in to the classroom, Mrs. Geisheimer gave the students a Do Now. The way she described the assignment was confusing because she told the students to do the right side of the page, but when showing the class the paper, she was pointing to the left side of the page.…

I always have followed the saying “if you work hard in life now you will not have to work as hard later.” This saying applies not only to how I work during school now, but how I participate in activities outside of school. To excel in what you want to achieve in life, I believe you need to put in the best effort and try your best in whatever you do. Living by this idea has helped me become a leader in the things I do. It has helped me put others at the same standard as myself and it helps me show my character.…

    Spot Questions

Jimmy, in your discussion post you brought up a good point - calculating the answer on the spot. I think that some students have difficulty with this simply because they are shy, may not be good with being put on the spot, or just may not be a student, who thinks quickly on their toes. I use to be this type of student in school. If I was called on in Math class, I always had a hard time answering the questions that my teacher would call on me for. This was partially because I was not good at math and secondly because I was generally always a step or two behind, due to trying to practice and learn the concepts that were being taught.…

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been told “be proud of who you are” and “stand up for yourself.” My mother always told me, “Never give anyone the permission to make you feel less than who you are.” I’ve always wondered why my mother drilled these lessons into my head. Perhaps, it is because of my grandmother’s dehumanizing experiences growing up in Jim Crow, Mississippi or maybe it’s the overt discrimination my grandfather experienced as a Ghanaian international student in rural Wisconsin. Growing up in Montgomery County, Maryland has been easy, maybe too easy.…

Students in this classroom looked very lazy to me, they were not rushing on completing their work. I didn’t observed much motivation from a teacher, which is very important for students to set up goals and be motivated to achieve them. In this case study, Rich Thorpe is an extremely passionate first-year teacher at West Alton High School. Rich was very grateful to have received this job, and has put a lot of effort into his teaching, despite the pressures of a first year teacher. For the first three quarters of the year, he has had good classroom management skills, and his students respect him as a teacher. He clearly spends time thinking about his students because when he noticed a few of them were struggling toward the end of the year he became concerned and wanted to help them out, especially since their behaviors effected the entire class.…
