We, as people, are held back from being self-reliant because of social norm, technology, and material possessions. Some of these reasons are more influential than others, obviously. First, is that people rely so much on technology to do almost everything for them, that their knowledge and confidence without it is almost non-existent, for example, calculators and gps make life easier, but also make us think a little less. Another reason is social norm, and this goes with the technology because when people browse social media and see that people have more friends, money, or accomplishments, it makes them feel sad and empty.
