The American Dream can be summed up into a couple different things. The American Dream is different for everyone and that makes is so unique. Not everyone has the same dream so not everyone achieves what others do.The dream itself is just an idea of how successful one might want to be. The social norm traps people and some can never get out even when they try. In the Great Gatsby it says “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back, ceaselessly into the past” The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald. During the book the social norm is to go back into the past and try to relive it, even though you can 't relive what happened in the past. You can’t follow the social norm unless you want some type of consequence to happen. The consequence may not be as bad as what happens to Jay Gatsby but you can’t try and go back and change what has already happened. You have to break from the social norm and go your own path and do what makes you happy rather than what makes others happy. Robert Frost once wrote “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I - I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all of the difference.” “The Road not Taken” by Robert Frost. Robert Frost is saying that you should not take the road that everyone takes and you should try something different and get away from what everyone does.
