The social norm is to at least have on seat in between you and the person next to you. Well I broke this social norm. I was running late to class and got there pretty late, so generally seats were taken. When I walked in, the room was pretty full, but there was still a good amount of empty seats, so I went over to the closes empty seat and sat down and was like thank god there is no one sitting here. Social norms. Social norms are rules of behavior that are considered acceptable by a group or society, but what if the social norm happens to be oppressing and discriminating an entire race of people based solely on the color of their skin, how is it still considered right? And what if half of a nation relied on this idea of social norm in order to power their economy? This social norm I have described was slavery. It is disappointing that society constantly labels what constitutes as “beautiful”, this creates stress among the female gender, who then have to consort to what is considered the social norm. The majority of elite high society members don’t address racism in America until a huge incident involving hate crimes or death comes out. This then creates an upheaval in the rest of the social classes because they were already aware of the hostility among the people. It is unfortunate that the majority of sexual assault crimes go overlooked in America, and that even speaking about rape or molestation is considered to be taboo.…

In many different societies we all contain social norms. Fundamentally, social norms are defined as “the rules of behavior that are considered acceptable in a group or society” (YourDictionary). In other words, norms are the written or unwritten rules of behavior that we follow in everyday life. Some norms could be an effortless gesture such as “holding a door for an individual”. But other social norms are more strictly held to in certain situations than in others; for instance, slapping a stranger can lead to bad altercations other than dealing with the cops (if some would say).…

Due to her outlook on life, it is clear that Adeline’s family and friends resented her for wanting more and for having an imagination. Although people live with an idea that there are “social norms” to abide by, those expectations start to fade rather quickly across society because of challenges people pose. The main character, Nan, proves how worthy she is to escape the norms and become something no one ever expected or wanted a woman to become, a doctor. The same can be said for various couples that continually prove to society that they are able to overcome social standards. Dyer’s statement about marrying someone of a different class is a difference of opinion.…

Social Norms and Expectations DeeDee Hensley Bakersfield College Soci B1 Society has certain expectations for everyone’s behavior. These expectations can differ between men and women, adults and children, and even between people of different ethnicities. In my experiment, I decided to test the expectation of women to be chaste and pure by sitting with my legs uncrossed while wearing a dress. Rather than sit next to people at tables with an empty seat, I would sit next to them while on the floor even though they would have an empty seat at the table. This experiment pushed social boundaries and comfort zones as many people felt uncomfortable with my behavior.…

With the advent of social media, “following” occurs conveniently. However, this following may change both personal and social norms. Some followers blindly obey every norm from social media, mainly to keep up with what is popular. As the social media is highly accessible, the strength of the following is reinforced. This phenomenon can be described with a new word, “Normolemmingism,” analogous to lemmings blindly follow others in everything and ultimately commit to suicide just because others do that.…

All societies are constructed of social norms. Norms dictate how we should play our roles, and lay out basic rules on how to interact with others. Without norms, a society would not have social order. A society must have customary social arrangements in order to function properly.
