I would like you to take a moment and picture the most physically imposing person you can imagine. Now, chances are you probably pictured a really buff guy working out or punching someone in the face or something. It doesn’t really matter what you saw him doing, the point is, you probably imagined a man. One of the most widely perpetuated social norms of all time is that women are physically and mentally weaker than men. This has been pretty definitively proven by scientists to be incorrect, and yet it is always expected that the damsel in distress will need a knight in shining armor to save her.…

These expectations can differ between men and women, adults and children, and even between people of different ethnicities. In my experiment, I decided to test the expectation of women to be chaste and pure by sitting with my legs uncrossed while wearing a dress. Rather than sit next to people at tables with an empty seat, I would sit next to them while on the floor even though they would have an empty seat at the table. This experiment pushed social boundaries and comfort zones as many people felt uncomfortable with my behavior.…

Societal Norms, Personal Expression, and Politics Societal Norms are the expected behaviors of individuals within a group. Behaviors in opposition to societal norms are permitted to a certain extent, in the U.S., typically under the right to free speech. Here in the U.S. as well as in Le Guin’s galaxy, a group’s social norms are intrinsically tied to politics, and the reaction of each society to personal expression is influenced by the society’s politics. The socio-political structure on Anarres is an example of “nonauthoritarian communism” which requires decentralized self-government through self-regulation, and dictates that all assets are the property of the community not the individual (Le Guin 342).…

Although I had seen the car keys and wallet on the table but I thought I would try something out of the ordinary for this assignment and also this particular day I woke up feeling rather too excited with myself and everyone around me. However, in the meanwhile the person who was sitting on the table suddenly came and told us that these things belong to him.…

Society is constructed of many expectations on the proper way to behave in a given situation, and those expectations are considered to be the norms in society. These norms are written, spoken and otherwise indicated, and are in place to create peace and harmony for all the members of society. The rules overriding these norms are divided into several categories known as folkways, mores, taboos and laws. As we compare the many rules that govern our society in the form of folkways, mores, taboos and laws, we begin to understand the value of each one, as well as the consequences for disregarding them. Out of these rules, the most severe consequences come from violating the social norms through acts of crime pertaining to criminal law.…

For example, it is normal that when a person meets someone for the first time you shake their hand. However, every country and culture has its own set of what to do and what not to do in public. The cooperative principles of conversation act as mechanisms of social control that facilitate efficiency and politeness in everyday social interaction. These principles include: quantity, giving enough information; quality, giving enough evidence; relevance, giving relevant information; and manner, giving clear, concise information. Relevance is the driving force behind the implications and assumptions we create in our social exchanges. An implication is a conclusion one jumps to based on a statement that doesn’t explicitly state what is understood to be relevant. Perceived implications lead to assumptions, which are the beliefs and expectations that are accepted as relevant by a conversational partner without any proof.…
