Cultural and social norms in any society influence the way adolescent girls experience menarche, and also serve to shape their personal perceptions of that experience. Globally, women and girls have developed their own personal strategies to cope with menstruation. These vary greatly from country to country, and within countries, depending on available resources, economic status, local traditions, cultural beliefs, and knowledge or education.
