Social Norm Experiment Essay

To complete the social norm experiment, I went to the mall. I stared at people in different areas of the mall until I got a reaction from them. Sometimes I sat down at their table and others I just stood in front of them. The social norm that I violated was continuous eye contact without turning or looking at something else, which is not normal for people to do.
Before working on the experiment I assumed that everybody would take it in a different way but several of them vocalized it the same by saying, "It was weird", which is how I would of explained it as well. Also, before I did this, I expected people to respond in the ways that I think I would. It was very interesting to watch when they didn’t react as expected because it's something

He didn’t pay any attention to me and when I asked him questions he just seemed grumpy. At first I thought his reaction was because he was an older man, but since then I've had time to think about it and it might have been because it was late and maybe the guy just wanted to relax and read his book. I came to this conclusion because after him I went and sat in between two younger ladies. One laughed and smiled and the other got angry and walked off which didn’t seem to be a very logical reaction to me as I didn’t even see that as a possibility therefore I didn’t get her response. However I did get to interview her friend who said she just thought it was weird that someone would come and sit in between them as they were talking. I understand how the first girl was agitated because I wouldn’t want someone to come sit in on one of my conversations. So in retrospect, maybe it's not age but the time of day that I conducted the experiment. Who knows? It could be any number of things that could have affected the way they acted. Then when I went to the mall the second time I sat next to a lady and it didn’t even faze her that I was staring at her. She tried to start a conversation, then when I was interviewing her, she said me staring was kind of weird but it didn’t really bother her. Being weird seemed to be a reoccurring theme to the people I talked

For this sociological experiment I broke the norm that led to the ¨personal bubble¨ rule, by getting, “too close¨ to strangers when I talk to them by society's standards. This social norm shows that people are used to having their own space and not having others be within a certain distance. When you talk or interact with another person you both are in control of the personal space given. This leads to me testing others by stepping over boundaries to make them feel uncomfortable, nervous, or embarrassed.…

I performed this folkway violation on on 10/12/16, in the media center after school. Tommy nguyen was the one who observed the social experiment on wednesday when I went up to the group of teenagers in the media center. They completely ignored/ accepted it as normal and didn't even notice that I came up to them and started talking with them. I was so surprised at that because usually people are weirded out and or give you a nasty grin or mean look. This really shocked me that some people don’t care if they get interrupted.…

Social norms. Social norms are rules of behavior that are considered acceptable by a group or society, but what if the social norm happens to be oppressing and discriminating an entire race of people based solely on the color of their skin, how is it still considered right? And what if half of a nation relied on this idea of social norm in order to power their economy? This social norm I have described was slavery. And the half of nation I’m referring to that depended upon the continued idea of this social norm in order to power their economy was the south during pre-civil war times.…

This experiment showed the significance of social norms and how much social norms play a role in society and the way in which people, as individuals, act. The social norm I broke proved to be significant in how people saw me and how they reacted. just standing the wrong way in the elevator changed the way some people felt, and they started to feel uncomfortable. because my actions went against the social norm it proved to generate strong reactions. As I entered the court house I was nervous about conducting this experiment.…

Norm violations are common in society today. Norms are defined as being “expectations of ‘right’ behavior” (Henslin, 49). There are two types of norms: folkways and mores. Folkways are a type of norm that are not strongly implemented, meaning that to go against this type of norm is not as severe as going against a more. A more is a type of norm that is forcefully implemented.…

Explain why it is important for a helping professional to be aware of the coaction of genes and environment. Be sure to include a definition of coaction, with examples. Coaction is any connection between organisms within a community. Gottlieb gave premium to coaction; he said that epigenesis involves the emergence of functional as well as hereditary competencies and properties. To me an example of coactions is a pregnant woman, the women need to eat healthy to provide food to the baby and she has to protect the baby from any harm.…

As I was violating this social norm, I felt strange and out of place. I had a lot of awkward encounters that day and i think it was because i normally don't stop and start talking to strangers or greet them by using hand gestures. Normally if someone smiles or says hi, i smile back or say or hi and then we both go our separate ways. With this experiment, I would have to stop and greet them in an unusual and personal way.…

Your social norm is something that I would never have thought of. I would probably have been taken back too. To them it was probably like not shaking someone’s hand when you first meet them. I am glad that they finally excepted it and were not as rude about it. Social norms are definitely something I would not be ready for in another country.…

%To summarise, in such an approach, rewards act like an increase in the noise/signal ratio or even a change in the sign of the signal, and the resulting crowding-out of the reputational (or self-image) motivation to participate can make the aggregate supply downward sloping over a wide range, with a possible sharp drop to zero. What are the implications of such an analysis of the interaction between incentives and social norms? First, material incentives such as prizes or the law are not very effective for eliciting admirable pro social behaviours, i.e. behaviours that are honour-driven: incentives indeed crowd out intrinsic motivation, especially for the most altruistic. Second, incentives are more effective to strengthen respectable behaviour, i.e. behaviour that is stigma-driven: incentives indeed…

From this experiment I learned that people are quick to judge, but will most likely never comment about the behavior that they are judging. Moving forward this experiment will help me to realize that I shouldn't just assume that a person is acting a specific way because of their disposition, but instead I should look and see if it is situational…

I enjoyed the experiment; I enjoy making people uncomfortable and aside from the one threat of violence it was an amusing experience. I violated all the norms, but mostly, I violated personal space the most. I would probably do it again. I do find it odd that in a culture that is typically encouraging of social, friendly behavior, we have decided to draw an arbitrary line when it comes to the…

Un-occupied, Un-employed Before doing this experiment, I imagined what would happen as I was standing in the crowd while doing nothing and had several different scenarios. I was pretty sure that I would feel embarrassed as I cared so much about how other people view me and I believe there must be someone asking me if I was ok. I chose to stand in front of a popular restaurant in the Grove at dinnertime.…
