Social Norm Analysis

The social norm which was violated by me is sitting in an empty chair at an otherwise occupied table. This social norm was violated at a local fast food restaurant near my residence. I visited a restaurant few days back with one my friend and we wilfully sat on a table on which a person was already sitting and he went to the counter to order the food. Although I had seen the car keys and wallet on the table but I thought I would try something out of the ordinary for this assignment and also this particular day I woke up feeling rather too excited with myself and everyone around me. However, in the meanwhile the person who was sitting on the table suddenly came and told us that these things belong to him. That was a very embarrassing situation for me and I apologized to the individual because of this misunderstanding and moved to the next empty table in the restaurant. Referring back to the textbook, considering proxemics I would be in the intimate space with his belongings, personal space with my friend and in social space of the stranger who’s seat I took. …show more content…
I visited the restaurant during the peak lunch hours, therefore, majority of the tables were occupied and lot of people were sitting in the restaurant and enjoying their food. The reaction of the individual was as anticipated, he seemed defensive, as I saw his grip on this food tray get tighter and I could see the slightest bit of anger in his face because his nose did flare up, although his voice seemed subdued. Some people believed that I mistakenly sat on the seat and the incident happened just because of the misunderstanding. However, there were also few people who expressed that it was not a mistake and I intentionally tried to grab the table because there were very few tables available in the restaurant and I tried to sit on the table, which was near to the food

Sharing the sights and sounds of the food in your mouth with those who are sitting near you is offensive, unsanitary and is simply bad manners. c. I selected to break this norm because I felt it would get the most response, by multiple people, with a single attempt. Through observation I would be able to tell who was bothered, annoyed or completely disgusted by my actions. I also chose to break this norm because I felt there was a low risk of the outcome resulting in a physical altercation or yelling match. 3.…

Social norms. Social norms are rules of behavior that are considered acceptable by a group or society, but what if the social norm happens to be oppressing and discriminating an entire race of people based solely on the color of their skin, how is it still considered right? And what if half of a nation relied on this idea of social norm in order to power their economy? This social norm I have described was slavery. And the half of nation I’m referring to that depended upon the continued idea of this social norm in order to power their economy was the south during pre-civil war times.…

Violating Social Norms (or: The Most Uncomfortable Elevator Ride of My Life) Upon completing this assignment, I have come to the conclusion that trying to violate a social norm on purpose is actually difficult and takes calculation, whereas accidentally doing it is so much easier. I chose to model my violation of a social norm off of the famous elevator groupthink experiment from the 1960s that has to do with conformity and ‘peer pressure’. I use to do this when I was a kid with my friends at the mall. We would have a high success rate, partly because there were about six of us.…

To complete the social norm experiment, I went to the mall. I stared at people in different areas of the mall until I got a reaction from them. Sometimes I sat down at their table and others I just stood in front of them. The social norm that I violated was continuous eye contact without turning or looking at something else, which is not normal for people to do.…

The location I choose to perform my violation of a culture norm was at the cafeteria. I used the cafeteria that is in the Gordon student center. One last thing that people can do to try and improve engagement would be to try normalizing the actions. The idea that by making people aware that other people around them are doing something to help the environment, may cause them to think otherwise regarding themselves and their actions. Also, referred to as descriptive social norms (DSN), this concept includes the perceptions of how populations like us are behaving, with the idea that human behaviour with model and imitate the people around us. There has been research to show that DSNs are effective in a real world setting in activities such as increasing charity donations and the reuse of towels in hotels (Agerstrom et al, 2016). An example of this would be the old elevator scene, where…

All societies are constructed of social norms. Norms dictate how we should play our roles, and lay out basic rules on how to interact with others. Without norms, a society would not have social order. A society must have customary social arrangements in order to function properly. A society naturally develops a system of social control in order to enforce these social norms, both formally and informally.…
