Network Smart!
Social networking sites are an integral part of over 3.4 billion people 's lives. With a figure like that, social networking sites must be pretty amazing, right? Not necessarily. Despite users increased social capital, and the increased ability to connect and identify with relatable groups,these sites can pose unknown risks and consequences that users struggle to deal with. These include time and commitment oversights, negative impact on relationships, and internet predators targeting users. An article by Gillespie assessing the consequences of cyberbullying states that cyberbullying has “two dimensions”, or ways that bullying occurs. Firstly, bullying occurs in the typical form of online harassment, hate messages, displaying awkward photos online, etc. All of this is done online and the victim never sees the perpetrator face-to-face. Between the awkward post seen by 500 people, to the useless hours upon hours spent milling through cat photos or arguing with a friend over something that could have been avoided if they had used a less impersonal medium to communicate, to the dangerous effects of stalkers, online harassment, and cyberbullying, Social networking sites can be dangerous to users who are unaware. People should treat interactions in social networking sites cautiously, and know how to deal with negative stimuli experienced, or at least know who to talk to (optimally someone who you can talk to face to face), about things that happen over social networking sites. Many people have already fallen into the traps of false security and time overextension. Go help them and inform people of the risks posed by social networking sites and tell them to network smart!
