A Social networking site is a platform to make social relations with various people who like to connect and share information about themselves with others. A social network service consists of a user who makes a profile online, so that the other people who are already have one, can identify each other easily. Social networking sites provide a medium for lot of services like connecting with the friends, job opportunities, reading blogs and much more. When it comes to location, social networking websites allow families, couples, and friends to stay connected with simple click of a button. As the technology advances, these networking sites have provided an easier mode for the communication.” My re­ search shows that children can maintain friendships through SNSs in a way that would not have been possible before, remaining in contact with friends who have moved to different countries and supporting friendships online even though face­to­face com­ munication is not possible”( Clarke). Lives of the people are becoming much easier than it was earlier. But these social sites have lot of disadvantages. The three most critical disadvantages of social networking sites which could affect a person’s life very severely are Hacking, personal relationships problems and social effects.

First negative effect of using social networking sites is hacking. Hacking is a skill in which a professional known as a hacker disrupts the normal functioning of the user’s profile and breaches its security creating lot of problems for the user. Hacking has become the most common attack that the user’s face by using these sites. Social problems include diminishing privacy, health problems, isolation and many others. In this hectic life, people don’t get the time to socialize personally, so they use media like social networking sites, but their privacy gets hampered. Over use of these networking sites was also associated with depression, substance abuse, poor sleep patterns and even suicide. Next big social problem is isolation. Users spend more time on social networking sites; therefore they rarely get a chance to involve in face-to-face interaction, which can eventually lead to psychological, emotional and physical health problems. “Since the inception of social networking, the quality of conversations has dropped. I believe that people are spending so much time online that they don’t always understand the feeling, emotion and/or character of the person they are talking to. When you talk to someone through a message or even a voice, you can’t always fully understand them” (Mitchell). Addiction to these social networks is something that even adults get prone by using this media. Wanting to know how perfect someone else’s life is or how miserable they are, as compared to themselves. This is a serious issue, which results in a lack of focus and concentration, as seen in teenagers. This is why using these social networking sites are considered time consuming.
