With the advancement in technology in a short matter of time it has impacted the world in many ways, such as how the world communicates and our lifestyles. One of the many revolutionary inventions or evolution is called social networking sites (SNS). Social networking sites such as Myspace, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, and many more, are where people gather on the internet, create a personalized profile about themselves, and interact with people around the world. With the lack of parental supervision and increase in maturity between the ages of 14 to 17, which makes one of the largest demographics using social networking sites, these teens could be subjected to mature elements. According to a study done by Wauters, American users spend an average of five hours and 46 minutes per on Facebook. That’s Facebook alone! Think how much time is wasted when all the social networking sites are put together. Furthermore, students are greatly affected by the rise of social networking. I, myself, was also affected, during my sophomore year of high school; I got into the popular Myspace. I became entrenched, focusing on personalizing the profile and everything that everyone did. In one of my classes, I was already doing bad, getting Cs on the test, but with the introduction of Myspace into my life I dropped the ball and my grades for that class continually got worst, but somehow I managed to pull off a C. Both stories are a good example about students who do not prioritize their time effectively by putting entertainment first. If it would have gone any further it might have truly affected their futures dramatically. Statistics shows that 75% of college recruiters use social networking sites as a filter to weed out the unwanted prospect. Students that applied to their colleges of their choices, 25% were eliminated based on what the recruiters had uncovered . This hinders the child’s ability getting into their respective college of choice, and might settle for another college that’s not reputable as the first choice. But this does not only apply to students applying for college, but can also affect people seeking careers. Melissa Acker had a friend that was planning on joining the LAPD and her friend was subjected to a background search. What the LAPD found were images posted--drinking and smoking-- by that person on Facebook that did not reflect the LAPD views. He was ultimately rejected by the department. Another example comes from a parent from Michigan, Carrie, tells a story about her daughter, Ryan. She and a friend created a profile dedicated to one of her teachers in order to vent some anger. On the profile they posted comments making fun of her weight and stories about this teacher that were untrue. The profile became a hit with the students and became ‘heroines’ among the students, but the school faculty had gotten wind about the slanderous profile, and decided to expel both the
