Do you believe social networking can have a big effect on you or others? As of January 2014, there are 48% more Americans using social networking sites since 2008 (Pew Research Center). Social networking is one of the best things to happen in today’s society. The different sites that are made for social networking are being used by multiple individual’s years round, in many different ways. This topic has been a huge argument. Some may see social networking as a bad thing for our society but, I believe social networking has a big positive effect on our society. A major reason social networking was created was so others can improve their friendship, get in contact with old friends or family, and also make new friends. For instance, today high school teachers, and professors have students create PowerPoints, and videos on lessons they have learned in class. Due to students using social networking as an everyday hobby, once they have turned the projects in, teachers upload the videos to social networks for students to turn to and study. Therefore students are able to share the videos with friends on other social sites who also needs help in the subject. It has been stated that, 59% of students with access to the Internet report that they use social networking sites to discuss educational topics, and 50% use the sites to talk about school assignments. (NATIONAL SCHOOL BOARDS ASSOCIATION). Moreover, professor who combine class work and social networking together, gains more attention from students. Blending the subjects together can give students a more understanding in school lessons. Christine Greenhow, professor at University of Maryland stated, “Educators who incorporate social media into the classroom can make lessons more relevant and meaningful.” Teachers are using social media in many ways as a teaching tool for students. Particularly, to have the students ready for the business environment, and also for those who can be too shy to answer questions out loud in class. As said by Sarah Kessler, “Taking some discussions online would also seem to be an opportunity for kids who are shy or who don’t usually interact with each other to learn more about each other.” In fact, using these social networks are expanding the student’s skills in technology.
