Social Networking and Collaboration The social networking progressive technology tools gives hands on experience for students and teachers in the collaborative classroom. Social networking has proven potential to enhance both the effectiveness and efficiency of a meaningful collaborative learning experience in the class curriculum. Thus, social networking is the “information age” in society, which are teaching and learning investments in the educational success of students (Mama & Hennessy, 2013). In essence, educators today use social networking technology in the classroom curriculum to promote a collaborative environment for tomorrow’s student. Both teachers and students can be connected local, state-wide, and international sharing of information throughout the global world. Social networking is the technological tools for intelligence. Thus, educators are able to share ideas, lesson plans, and techniques online on the computer, which makes it is easier for teachers to share information from state to state and around the world (lessons can also be collaborated in real time-classes). Nevertheless, educators and students can communicate by using Skype after school to collaborate on lesson plans, classroom curriculum, and the homework assignments. Social networking can aid teachers, who was once isolated in their classrooms, to be connected with other colleagues via video sites such as Skype. A teacher can do a lesson plan in history and collaborate with another educator half way around the world about their history and environment. Hence, “social networking presents a unique opportunity to both initiate and sustain dialogue on a wide range of topics” (Grand Canyon University, 2012, p. 1). Without the social networking technology remote distance students would not have access to an education on-line. There are several different generational groups in today’s technology climate, such as veterans or silent generation born before 1945. The veteran educators in schools today are considered to be thoughtful about the instructional leadership and learning for all students. The novice teachers need to have seminars or mentor the veteran teachers on how to use the modern social networking technology. In return the veteran teachers need to have seminars or mentor the novice teachers on their personal experiences as first year teachers. It has been said that everyone can learn or share something with the next person. Secondly, there are the baby boomers born between 1946 and 1964. The baby boomers must make a commitment to be consistent in their loyalty… The generation X, is the third group that were born between 1965 and 1980, in their decisions to use modern social media. Lastly, are the generation Y or the millennial’s born between 1980 and 1994. This is the generation of teachers that have hands-on skills in modern technology. Today’s students are doing homework on the computers (most schools supply the students with a laptop). Thus, technology such as Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Twitter, Internet, and others all are inclusive in the innovation of classroom curriculums.
