How Does Social Networking Affect Our Society

I believe that social networking has changed the way people interact in our society. So much caution has to be used when posting on the internet and not all people understand that. Those are the main issues in this section. There are examples of these problems explained in more than three essays in the chapter. Things like mood, job opportunities, positions on a team, and even acceptance into schools are altered because of carelessness on the internet. Alfredo Lopez discusses the difference between the internet and the World Wide Web in “Social Networking and the Death of the Internet”. The main problem in this section is the fact that the child already has most of her life online that future employers or any other types of authority can see. The parents are “robbing her of a digital adulthood that’s free of bias and presupposition”. This could cause some awkward interactions with other people in the future of the child’s life because many have already seen what the parents posted. Maybe the child grows up to find that he/she is embarrassed and won’t want to talk to most people. That is the cause of a change in interaction with people. The parents “are preventing her from any hope of future anonymity”. Browning discusses the monitoring of social media when it comes to students and athletes. Again, different types of social media “platforms have forever changed the landscape of communications and information sharing”. Student athletes in this essay are required to install specific software that notifies a coach or official in the athletic department. If they were to post something that doesn’t fit a certain standard of content, then they could be put on restriction, kicked off a team, punished academically and so on. It has also been discovered that two universities had a “400 or so word list included words and phrases like ‘Arab,’ ‘Muslim,’ and ‘gay” (498). This causes conflict between different groups of students and how they connect. Athletes might feel very uncomfortable talking to someone of a different sexual orientation that might have heard about the flagged word used.
