Statistically, it is more likely that the people who are glued to their phones are from the millennial generation. According to a poll conducted by Common Sense Media, a nonprofit organization, fifty percent of teens felt as though they were addicted to their cellular devices. Along with that, 59% of parents admitted that their teens were addicted to their cellular devices. This poll involved a total of 1,240 interviews including parents and their children from ages 12 to 18 (CNN, 2016). There’s no discrepancy on why the millennial generation is more prone to using their cellular device. The technological advancement of computers, smart phones, and instant social networking was developed throughout the growth of this generation, therefore not only gaining more exposure but being targeted by corporations. Despite how this generation arrived at this addiction, it is more important to recognize that this addiction is a problem. The communication that is used in social networking is behind a screen, therefore it does not have a non-verbal aspect to it. Non-verbal communication is one of the most important forms of communication between people. It often defines how words and statements are perceived and actually gives a clearer understanding of what a person is attempting to state. The connotation of words can often be lost within text and instant messaging. On the campus of the University of Michigan, after surveying a group of 10 people, many of them stated that they would prefer to speak to someone in person because words can be easily misread and misunderstood over text and instant messaging. These people have also stated that the miscommunication often lead to conflict with the person that they were speaking to. Miscommunication is less prevalent with direct communication because people are able to perceive more from the conversation, from the voice a person is using to speak to their body language, therefore creating less conflict between
