What is the American Dream? The American Dream can be interpreted to be where one sees oneself in a couple years. The dream is the goals that one tries to pursue with the help of perseverance, education and stability - this is the American Dream, it is what helps motivate a person to be better and go farther in life. Although the American Dream is to serve as motivation to be good and to achieve stability, for some college students achieving a showy American Dream is their goal. College students think of the American Dream as if it were a means to make the most money and garner better materialistic things like the newest car. In essence, Adam Shepard viewed the American Dream as an opportunity to do one’s personal best in life. In Abowitz’s survey, students had a more realistic view towards the American dream. Their views were a lot more reasonable regarding what they want to achieve. The American Dream, for these students, is to be able to achieve their goals by working hard and doing this with no help. These students don’t want to have to depend on family or connections to be able to succeed in life but they do want to be able to achieve their goals on their own.
