Social Media's Small, Positive Role In Human Relationship Analysis

The world is always changing. Most of the time this allows humans to progress and improve upon themselves. Nevertheless, when change occurs, there are people who tend to think it is always for the worse. The recent developments in technology and social media play a growing role in this situation. A psychologist and professor at M.I.T, Sherry Turkle, discusses in her article, “The Flight From Conversation,” how social media destroys conversations and human relationships. Zepynep Tufekci published a rebuttal to Turkle’s argument, “Social Media’s Small, Positive Role in Human Relationships,” which directly addresses Turkle’s views and explains how she believes that social media enhances relationships by allowing people from all over the world to communicate, but argues that television creates a problem. They discuss the role of social media and television and how it kills conversation, creating a false sense of connection. In contrast, I believe that these technologies actually help to bring people together. When one values a relationship, they are able to continue showing their value for it through social media while miles apart. Also, people can find groups of friends based on interests rather than geographic proximity, which demonstrates that they value the friendships that they create online. In addition to social media, television has the ability to bring people together by sharing a common interest and bonding over the program. When people abuse social media or television, they make Turkle and Tufekci’s anxiety about the loss of compassion a reality. However, when used in the way it is intended, social media and television have the power to bring people together in a valuable way. My generation should not be worried about degrading their relationships when in fact they taking more care into creating and maintaining
