DeLyn Martineau a school teacher who once suffered through years of bullying as a young adolescent understands better than anyone the negative effects of evolved bullying. Martineau states, “Bullying and social pressure don’t stop when kids reach the haven of home, invading a kid’s life constantly, even when he or she is involved merely indirectly” expressing how bullying’s transformation has become more dangerous. Bullying on social media can come in may different forms not just derogatory comments. For many young individuals social media has become a piece of every day life, in a survey the vast majority of individuals spent between 1-10 hours a day on the internet or using social media. This survey also revealed that the majority of time spent on social media was used searching for information instead of sharing (posting) information. With so much exposure to the internet and social media both during and outside of school social media is beginning to have a very negative effect on young adults. Over the years educators and school boards alike have worked to help prevent and punish bullying in an attempt to protect each child’s right to an education unimpeded by a negative atmosphere. Despite their best efforts bullies are still able to use social media as a way to bully with few to no consequences. Many organizations and non-profits are working towards the same goal of ridding schools and social media of bullying one of these is Safe to Tell. Safe to tell gives students an anonymous service to report bullying, authorities and school representatives can then be alerted to the situation. The only way to help prevent cyber bullying is for parents to be aware of their children’s online profiles in an attempt to monitor their interactions with school peers. Schools can
