How Does Social Media Have A Negative Impact On Our Lives

Although social media has its benefits, that does not mean it is valuable for our world. I believe that social media has proven to be more of a negative impact on our lives rather than a positive one. I no longer use social media, but I did about 6 months ago. I know how efficacious it can be at times, but I also know how addicting and misleading it really is. Social media has made us one of the most incoherent societies. We think that being on social media actually makes us social. “The more social media we have, the more we think we 're connecting, yet we are really disconnecting from each other” (JR). We find it hard to communicate with people in person now, because we are so used to telling them over the phone. “Social networking can exacerbate feelings of disconnect (especially for youth with disabilities), and put children at higher risk for depression, low self-esteem, and eating disorders (procon.org). Social media can affect relationships. People would rather build a relationship over the internet rather than mending their own fragmented marriage, or relationship. It’s easy for people to cheat on their spouse, or partner …show more content…
I know that social media is not the one doing the insulting, but it does provide a very simple way of doing it behind a screen. “49.5% of students reported being the victims of bullying online and 33.7% reported committing bullying behavior online” (procon.org). I know that cyber bullying does not sound like a big deal, but it can lead to self-harm, and even suicide. Honestly, I don’t think kids can fathom what they’re really doing. “Kids should speak to each other. They 're horrid to each other online, they bully each other - they should shut up and stop it. The problem with social media is there is too much freedom. It 's too much, too young”

It has done such good in the world and also caused great pains. Ultimately however, social media has behaved as any other new technology, by connecting and benefiting society for all those who use it for good and bringing harm and discourse by those who use it negatively. There is not a new technology anywhere that cannot also be used for evil intent, and bring harm to many. Social media is good for society, as long as one approaches it with the caveat that social media is in the hands of the user, capable of doing good and bad.
