Social Network’s Effect on Relationships The monster that has become social media can put a lot of extra stress on friendships, families, and relationships these days. Social media takes a toll on friendships when groups of friends are torn apart by drama and other forms of miscommunication. Families that are constantly keeping their attention on social media are risking the chance of having a normal family relationship. Being in a relationship, and the constant activity on social media, it is impossible not to think of their significant other inappropriately liking someone else’s photo on Instagram or sending DMs on Twitter. How an individual can seek out our attention could be by: constantly lying, acting out, and fishing for compliments. Being friends with an attention seeker can be hard because no matter where the group goes, the individual seeking attention will find a way to do so. The seeker will make up stories, not caring if their friends know the real truth. So friendships are put to the test when it comes to attention seeking because there are some friends that get annoyed by the behavior. These friends will confront the individual about their stories, but if the attention seeker isn’t willing to then tell the truth, the friendship could be broken. If families have an attention seeker among them, it could be the family member who is constantly acting out. Typical acting out behavior is throwing a tantrum, fighting, and possibly stealing. These actions are more likely to happen within families because of their young children and teenagers. Children seek attention from their parents, peers and other adult figures in their life. Not getting the positive attention they desire will lead them to act out for negative attention. Parents giving their children negative attention are often seen as bad parents, the parents that don’t know how to handle their children. Friends are affected by social media because of the rumors that may or may not be true. These rumors potentially break up friendships because whether or not the rumor is true, they have to overcome them. On social media there are applications that teenagers use to spread rumors along with gossip. Thanks to these apps, the rumors can get out of hand and eventually no one knows what the original rumor was. To overcome the a rumor, friends need to have trust with one another. Having trust will insure that nothing could break a friendship apart. However, rumors can become overwhelming and individuals tend to back out of friendships because they can no longer take part in immature behaviour. Social media affects families by creating drama within the family by posts and pictures on applications. Adding family members on social media can lead to drawbacks. Within a family, there is an individual who is always looking for gossip. This member will take a post and twist the original words around or look at a picture and make an assumption. Because once the post becomes public it’s out there forever. Once word gets around the family and back to the original owner of the post, there is no telling what is actually being said. The best advice is to not listen to what is said and know what is true. When gossip spreads within a family, they put their guard up. No family wants to have to watch everything
