Social media has had a huge effect on driving, none of it good. Social media directly effects safe driving and rivals texting and driving. Social media has gained popularity over the past few years, and with that rise also came an increase in automotive accidents. Teenagers are the easiest to blame, but the truth is the problem can persist even to those advanced in age. The ages effected by social media begin at sixteen and can continue up into thirty years of age. There is no easy solution to this problem, but one must be made. Social Media’s predominant apps consist of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger. While these are the top three, Facebook is “ruling supreme.” (Dave Chaffey, smartinsights) Facebook hold the top spot with 1,590 million active users. The next two are WhatsApp with 1,000 million active users and Facebook Messenger with 900 million active users. While Snap Chat can be ruled as the most dangerous of the three apps during driving. In fact two-thirds of Americans own smart phones. (Aaron Smith, Pew Research Center) With all the drivers included in that, many of them use that smartphone while driving. Some may be responsible and reasonable using the device like a GPS service. But many of them misuse their device while driving. Texting while driving is considered to be the most major of the problems, but social media is up and coming in second. The government, as well as the public, have accepted that smartphone use and driving has and will continue to cause injuries and death. There are now service announcements and fines given by the government to attempt and force people to be accountable and responsible for their devices.
