The three social media platform I chose to discuss are Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Facebook was created on February 4, 2004 by Harvard sophomore Mark Zuckerberg. The site was originally called The Facebook, but was later changed just to Facebook. The site was designed for people to share information about themselves with their friends. At first it was only open to people who attended Harvard University. The idea became quite popular, and in September 2006, Facebook opened up membership to anyone over the age of 13.

As of the second quarter of 2016, Facebook had 1.71 billion monthly active users. In the third quarter of 2012, the number of active Facebook users had surpassed 1 billion. Active users are those which have logged in to Facebook during the last 30 days. Also in that quarter the social network had 1.57 billion mobile monthly active users.

As of 2015 72% of online American adults use Facebook. Usage among seniors continues to increase, as 48% of internet users ages 65 and older now use Facebook, up from 45% who did so in late 2013. Women are also particularly likely to use Facebook compared with men, a trend that continues to rise from prior years. 77% of users are women compared to 66% who are men. 70% of users are white, 67% are black, 72% have some college education, and 72% are college graduates. 73% of users make less than $30,000/yr. 78% make $75,000/yr. or more. 74% of users live in urban areas, and 67% live in rural areas (Duggan, 2015).
