Negative Impact of Social Media In the recent times, the world has seen technological advancements that have improved communication through the use of the internet. The technology has changed the society since people have resorted to social media. Social media has become a favorite mode of communication in the society. For instance, Facebook has been instrumental in finding new and old friends and at the same time keeping in touch with the community and the family. Moreover, the number of people using social media continues to increase on a daily basis. On the other hand, social media channels have helped people to link with individuals having the same interests and thereby expanding ideas on a global scale (Zeitel 3). This implies that even children as young as ten years can connect to social media platforms. They are exposed to nude pictures and videos that might destroy their moral growth. Additionally, they can watch movies that might encourage them to develop challenging and disruptive behaviors. On the other hand, parents have had a serious challenge while controlling their behavior since they have been exposed to things that affect their character (Zeitel 6). Notably, the child will keep sharing pictures and video clips to their friends. They devote a lot of time on social media, and this is likely to affect their academic performance. Facebook and other social sites are very addictive, and thus the children can spend the entire day chatting and sharing information with friends. Besides, their activities are unchecked by their parents and guardians. It has been argued that the internet is very dangerous to the teenagers and even the adults (9). Most of the information on social sites is not censored. To some this might seem to be a simple issue but the photos and the language used by networks are unsuitable for the children. To make the matter worse the public views it and no one cares to question. On the other hand, the sites have led to decreased productivity since the sites have proven to be a distraction to the employees. Some of the employees may show more interest in what their friends are posting and forget their work responsibilities. Indeed, this can create severe consequences for companies that have utilized social media platforms to reach their customers (Aida 5). Some companies have responded by blocking social sites on their offices since most of the employees can be distracted. For instance, studies indicate that British companies have lost billions of dollars in productivity since most of the workers are addicted to social media (Parrack). Finally, social media can impact the health of individuals negatively. It is believed that the less the person moves, the more the weight the person accumulates. Indeed, few calories are burned while seated in front of a computer the whole day networking. Additionally, the computers and other devices have been associated with causing eye problems that make people to strain and thus leading to eyesight issues (Ghulam 9).
