Social media has taken a huge part in our lives. People of all ages interact on social media. According to http://webtrends.about.com/od/web20/a/social-media.htm, “Social media are web-based communication tools that enable people to interact with each other by both sharing and consuming information. The first social media site was Friendster, which was launched in 2002. The second social media site was Myspace, which was launched in 2003. These sites caught everyone’s attention; therefore, everybody started interacting with social media. The most common social media sites today are Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram (web.trends.about.com/od/web20/la/social-media-htm). People may think social media is a waste of time; however, it helps people learn important information about the world. In the last decade, the online world has changed dramatically. According to a Nielsen Media Research study, in June 2010, almost 25 percent of students’ time on the Internet is now spent on social networking websites (Jacobsen, & Forste, 2011). Many researchers have dived into a considerable amount of research on how social media affects people. Therefore, my research ascertains social media having a positive impact on people’s lives. The main purpose of this research is to expand on earlier research, explore the relationship between the effects of social networking, and to decide if social media has a positive impact on our lives.
