Good morning everyone. How many of you’d share your name, address, family and friend names, birth town, daily activities, photos of you and your family, and even your love life with random strangers you meet for the very first time? This question should’ve a very obvious answer. So why’d you do this on social media, such as similar to Facebook or Twitter. As many of you know, I’ve an Associate’s degree in Network Security Technology. Thusly, I’m very passionate about these types of subjects. Today, I’ll love illustrating a couple scary reasons why you should either not be a practitioner of social media, or severely limit the information you share online. The norm of social media, similar to what its name is, help you socialize in today’s technological world for you betterment. Ryan Holmes the CEO at Hootsuite wrote an article on May 28 2013 titled “3 Ways Social Media Can Help You Land a Job (And Keep It). He states, “If you’re not incorporating Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn into your job search, you’re missing out on a key competitive advantage.” You’ve all perhaps heard the saying, “It’s all about who you know”. Well, these social sites all people to connect and intermingle with others in their chosen fields. Thusly, results in employment opportunities and to keep up to date on career specific advancements. In accordance to employment advantages, social media also facilitates the opportunity for friends and family to communicate more effectively, as most probably already know. Much as my family do not live around each other, the probability that others families don’t live close enough to each other to keep in touch efficiently. These social media sites allow people to share precious mementos to each other, such as family photos and videos. Without these social media sites it would be very difficult to keep this degree of communication up across long distances, especially in large quantities. Do you know who has access to all of your info on and off the actual social media website? Erin Robinson, the program director at AOL wrote the article “3 Simple Tips for Safe Social Networking” on February 19th 2013. She writes, “Who can see your Facebook status? Who can tag you in a photo? Are your tweets public? Therefore, the first tip is to know what your privacy setting are and who you’re sharing you precious media with. In unison, you should know how to control the security and sharing preferences for the social media software application in which you take part. There are numerous websites you can examine and exploit, that depict what setting are available and what they pertain to. Limiting the types of information you post, can better protect yourself from the dangers of social media. In other words, don’t use personal identifiable information, similar to name, date of birth, and location. By refraining from sharing key types of information you’ll help alleviate a portion of the risks involved. Also, from the standpoint of future employment opportunities or other endeavors, think about the subject matter in what you’re posting. The posting of self-defaming material can be very disadvantageous for you in the future.
