I Introduction
a. Hook: How does the increasing use of social networking sites, especially Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, negatively impact on young adults?
i. In 2012, if Facebook was considered as a country, it would be a nation that has the third largest population in the world, after China and India, with over 995 million citizens (Lee xiii). ii. In the second quarter of 2015, a survey of Statista, an online statistics portal, showed that Twitter was used by 22 percent and visited by 39 percent of worldwide internet users (“Twitter visitor and active user reach worldwide as of 2nd quarter 2015”). iii. (iii) In other words, the emergence of social media as a new way to communicate could be harmful to face-to-face interaction and the ability to express ideas orally.
b. In “Social media Exploration,” critics of social networking services express a major worry that people who have grown up in the digital age express a reference for virtual contact rather than face-to-face interaction, and that limits the development of interpersonal communication skills (Clemmitt).
(i) By spending more time using and connecting with family, friends, and other people on social media platforms, young adults are investing their time and effort on virtual communication. As the result, they have less chance for in-person communication.
(ii) According to a survey in the third quarter of 2015, Statista’s members found that Facebook was accessed more than one time per day by 51 percent of the global internet users (“Facebook usage frequency of active users worldwide as of 3rd quarter 2015”). With the great number of daily access and update on Facebook, users have to deal with a great amount of information on this social networking site. Thus, they cannot spend most of their time on Facebook to read a thousand-character status update. Likewise, they have to consider what is the ideal length for their posts since they do not expect that other people will ignore their posts.

Students who participated in a study in which they had to undertake a 24-hour media-free assignment at the University of Maryland admit that although there are thousand students around them, it is “almost unbreathable” when they cannot connect with anyone through social networking (International Center for Media and The Public Agenda).
(i) There is a fact that young people are more and more addicted to social media and online interaction. Social media are considered as something that is significant for survival.
(ii) Young adults prefer living with the virtual relationship on social media rather than the real relationship.
(iii) Therefore, even when students study in a same school or class, they rarely have chance to know each other or built their relationship because everyone is busy with their phones and social media.
c. Russell Clayton asserts that the “Twitter usage leads to greater amounts of Twitter related conflict among romantic partners, which in turn leads to infidelity, breakup, and divorce” (429).
(i) Facebook and Twitter is the platforms that allow people not only enhance interpersonal communication but also meet a great number of new people. Among of them, there are many interesting and attractive people who are much better than one’s
