Social Media In Aldous Huxley's Brave New World

In Aldous Huxley book, “Brave New World”, it mentions a drug that everyone takes (soma) that “controls and tamed” humanity. Social Media is very much like the soma that all of the people take in Brave New World. They are related by how they both “control” society in a way that people feel obligated to do it. For example, if one of the people in a group doesn’t have a social media account they are almost excluded from the group because teens use social media almost more than texting. Lots of teens use it for communication. Just like how soma works, everyone takes it and teach everyone to use it, they label everyone that does “normal”. Many school have started to become more online based and be more dependent on technology. This is just a stepping stone for youth to get accustomed to using technology and later get more into the social media trends.
Brave New World tells us that in their society they teach kids at a young age to take this drug called soma. They made it part of their education and even made a jingle out of it. In our society we sort of do

Teens appear to have more friends online with thousands of followers, but may never hang out with real friends all week. Sometimes they are sitting at the same table with someone and they still choose to text because they are accustomed to using their phones. Before without social media teens would talk and tell jokes but now there are teens that don’t even talk when they are hanging out. This is not a good thing because if a teen spends too much time texting and calling they won’t have the social skills they need as an adult in the real world. “Adolescence and the early twenties in particular are the years in which you are acutely aware of the contrasts between who you appear to be and who you think you are,” says Dr. Wick (PSYcom).
