Social media is a major part of our modern society. There are many positive uses for social media such as allowing people to stay connected with family and friends, providing a platform for people to express themselves creatively, and enabling them to meet new people who share common interests. This access to rapid, instant communication via social media has definitely made a huge improvement in communication overall, but it has also had an especially negative impact on adolescent girls and young women. Adolescent girls and young women are the leading users of social media. In the United States, 90% of adolescents have used social media, and one third of adolescents visit social media sites several times a day (Loveless, 2016, p. e62). The …show more content…

Other implications for the sexual behavior that originates online but has the potential to affect individuals in real life are sexually transmitted diseases and infections, unplanned pregnancies, and unwanted sexual advances that could lead to rape and assault. Avenues for future study on this topic could include how to educated young women and young men about the dangers of social media. Increasing efforts to improve media literacy can result in a more positive outcome in regards to how it is affecting this demographic. Another avenue for study would be how to create positive environments that incorporate social media and real life interactions to help improve social skills and diminish instances of cyberbullying. The last suggested avenue for future study would be how to get parents involved in a non-invasive or punishing way so that the youth can explore their identities but without so many negative
