Social media is a major part of our modern society. There are many positive uses for social media such as allowing people to stay connected with family and friends, providing a platform for people to express themselves creatively, and enabling them to meet new people who share common interests. This access to rapid, instant communication via social media has definitely made a huge improvement in communication overall, but it has also had an especially negative impact on adolescent girls and young women. Adolescent girls and young women are the leading users of social media. In the United States, 90% of adolescents have used social media, and one third of adolescents visit social media sites several times a day (Loveless, 2016, p. e62). The biggest way that social media is affecting them is how it is influencing their sexual behavior and impacting their overall health and development. Sending sexually charged messages know as “sexting”, seeing celebrities who are glorified for their sex appeal, the pressure to post sexy images of themselves on their social media profiles known as “selfies”, and the abundance of sexually explicit content in the media may lead to a myriad of developmental and health problems during adolescence (Loveless, 2016, p. e62; Vandenbosch, Oosten, & Peter, 2015; Van Ouytsel, Ponnet, & Walrave, 2014;).
