Social media is much more than a place for crude jokes and sharing family vacation photos. The word media itself relates to a means of mass communication. Social media is the largest mass communication outlet the world has ever had. One website that sticks out to me as one of the best sites in connecting people and knowledge is Twitter. Twitter breaks the stigma of social media by combining the informational side of the internet with the entertainment side. Twitter allows everyday people to become documented creators of written history in just minutes. Twitter was created in 2006 by four men with the idea of communicating with small groups through text messages. Its popularity grew in the first year during the South by Southwest Interactive conference when Twitter’s daily usage increased three times from 20,000 tweets, or updates, to 60,000. From there it just kept growing and gaining popularity. By the end of 2007 there were 400,000 tweets being posted per quarter. All of these numbers sound good but what they really mean is much more. So many businesses have not just people but entire departments dedicated to their social media presence and online branding. Twitter allows companies and distinguished people to verify their accounts so that users can differentiate between real companies and fake accounts. This allows companies to interact with their customers online with support, suggestions, questions, and everything in between. Twitter is also a great place for up-and-coming brands to propel themselves in the marketing world. Using Twitter as a way to spread the word of a new product or brand is a great way to reach millions of quickly.
