Social Media Directors are an example of a career that did not exist even ten years ago, due to the new emergence of many social media platforms that were not around years before (Fontein, 2016).
A Social Media Director is someone who is in charge of all the social media marketing and advertising that takes place within a company (Kruse, 2016). This individual sets many of the plans and goals of the business’s online marketing, manages content, and works to increase leads and sales (Kruse, 2016). More specifically, the Social Media Director develops brands awareness and through that attempts to increase the company’s online reputation (Kruse 2016). Salary varies depending on aspects such as location of the company and job, size of the company, and level of skill upon entry. The average pay for a Social Media Director is $64, 523 per year, with a range from $28,791 to $126,676. These figures include potential salary, bonus, profit sharing, and commission. (Payscale, 2016). Pay for this job increases significantly for workers with more experience, but goes down for the few individuals with more than 20 years of experience (Payscale, 2016). Most people with this job do not have more than 20 years of experience, so this is a rare occurrence. In addition, it is very helpful to have a bachelor’s degree in public relations, marketing, or communications to gain the skills necessary for this job (Monster, 2015). A degree in Journalism also helps provide the skills to provide an adequate image on social media platforms (Study, 2016). It is also beneficial to have a degree in English as well, because this career is based off of online communication. Therefore, it is important to have structured and clear textual communication skills (Monster, 2015). Writing and computer skills are an absolute must-have on this career path, because social media management is done electronically (Study, 2016). As social media careers are increasing, some colleges and universities are beginning to offer programs such as “Internet Marketing” and social media coursework inside degrees such as Master of Business Administration. Popular topics within these courses are interactive marketing techniques, social media networking strategies, and social media analytics (Study, 2016). This programs are very helpful to understanding the requirements of this career, however due to the new nature of the programs, they are not absolutely essential to landing a job of this nature.
