It is nearly impossible to see young adults without their phones in hand. As impossible it is to see a phoneless college student, it is almost as impossible to see them shy away from social media. As soon as a person is logged into Facebook they are instantly updated about everyone’s’ lives; Jack broke up with Sally because Sally liked Jack’s friend, or Jack and Sally updated “in a relationship” to “it’s complicated”, or Sally just cannot keep her mouth quiet about her personal relationship issues. One has to wonder, how has social media affected dating amongst the newer generation, and have we come to far to turn around? Becoming Facebook official has become a ritual in the sense that it validates the relationship by publically declaring feelings between the two. With college-aged youth becoming Facebook official is linked to relationship satisfaction, while having a profile picture with their significant other adds to that satisfaction (Rueda, Lindsay, Williams, 2015). Gender also plays a role in how college-aged people act on social media while dating. It has been found females are more likely to show affection via SNSs like Facebook and find that it is appropriate to do so than males (Rueda et al., 2015). One study found that one in four adolescents dealt with dating violence (Baker & Carreño, 2015). Which is disturbing because according to the CDC (2014) dating violence starts young because teenagers deem unhealthy behaviors as normal then these relationships can turn into lifetime ordeals. It creates a nasty cycle of unhealthy relationships down the road.
