More and more people are using some form of technology or social network to communicate rather than speaking with others in person. As a matter of fact, up to ninety percent of teenagers are using some kind of social media outlet for communication (Woods). The easily accessible internet and social media outlets has caused face-to-face social interaction to gradually become a concept of the past. Communicating online, whether it is through text messaging, emailing, or writing a post on a social network, can be manipulated and altered before being sent (Mikulich). Social anxiety causes an individual to be harsher on themselves when it comes to expectations for how they want to present their character. With face-to-face interaction, those with social anxiety are more likely to make mistakes and cease to meet set expectations. The evidence regarding the effects of social media on an individual cannot be overlooked by a society where technology is evolving and becoming a significant part of our daily lives. Research has shown that social anxiety levels are influenced by social networks where face-to-face interaction can be avoided and a false self-image could be made, resulting in an individual to be more dependent on online environments, thus intensifying social anxiety levels further. The evidence regarding the results of social media and the internet on mental health and communication should be investigated by parents and individuals to promote a healthy wellbeing and strong communication
