The topic I chose to write my article about was how social media is affecting society. Throughout my article, I used information and statistics from a range of sources, which were mainly newspaper articles related to my topic. This was important because it meant that the information I used in my article would mainly be reliable and relevant to my topic. It also gave me different viewpoints, writing styles and ways in which media is used differently to engagingly put points across.
The first source I chose was an article from completeissues.co.uk posted in 2014 titled "Social media and the 'decline ' of language". I chose this article as the headline caught my attention as it clearly tells the reader what the article …show more content…
This article drew me in because of the huge image at the top of the page, this gave me the idea that I could use an image in my own article to engage the reader. The image used in this article drew me in because it’s an image of Facebook, which is something I use a lot, so I wanted to read on. To the left of the image, is a concisely written introduction telling the reader what issues are raised in the article. “Comedian Steve Day has a good return from thousands of hours of Facebook: one gig booking and one lost friend.” This quote shows that it is written by a comedian, which may influence the articles reliability, because some things may be over exaggerated or untrue as he may have fiddled with the facts to make it more comedic. For example when he says "so the 11,000 man hours haven 't been wasted", he hasn 't actually used 11,000 hours, he just uses this figure for comedic affect and to engage the reader. This article is opened with comedy when he says “Internet? Nah. Never use it”. This use of comedy draws the reader in and it gives the impression that the rest of the article will be written in this style. The articles basic message is about how Facebook is a waste of time and how it can affect real friendships because of silly little things. I could use the issue raised in this article in my own article as it shows social media affects social situations, which approaches social media negatively from a different angle to my other source. However, I won 't be discussing the "52 top friends" feature in my article, which is spoken about in "Wasting time for fun", to support the issue, as it is no longer relevant as this feature no longer exists on Facebook. Additionally, other aspects of this article will be outdated as it was published in 2008, and social media has greatly evolved during the last 7 years. However, I still
