It can cause harassment and or cyberbullying. There was a rash of teen bullying stories that made the news within the past couple of years. Teens are being picked on because of their sexual orientation, what they like to wear, noticed mistakes, or the color of skin. There are other multiple factors that lead to bullying, which isn’t fair to the victims. Sexting, which the action of sending sexual or revealing pictures of your body or sexually explicit messages to another individual and or group, is another common activity among the teenage community in social media. Often times these pictures are shared online with people that were not meant to see it. That is a huge violation of privacy, and damages trust. Once something is out in cyberspace, it’s out there forever. There are tons of cases of the victims committing suicide, self-harm, or having depression as well as anxiety from cyberbullying. Between the constant posts about cheating, and the drama about school fights, we see too much of one’s life online. Even when teenagers often feel connected to a friend’s feelings and life through social media, they also might feel that they are sometimes overly-connected to their friend’s lives. Many teens have witnessed others posting to social media about social gatherings that they weren’t even invited to. Some teenage social media users agree that people get to show different sides of themselves on social media that they cannot show offline. Some people oppose social networking, after saying that the sites can prevent real face-to-face communication. Others claim that it wastes time, and alters children’s behaviors, saying that it’s making them more prone to ADHD. Others are afraid for children’s safety, as predators like pedophiles pose as peers online.
Social networking sites allow people to improve their relationships and make new friends (Procon). Beyond making new friends, social media is major way that teens can interact with their old friends. Social media not only connects teens to information and friends, but also connects them to opportunities for social support from their friends and peers. (Pew Internet).
