In a broader sense, it applies to hiding behind a false avatar or intentionally misleading people on social media, in other words being fake and “flexing for the gram”. While what you see may be elusive or misguided, you need to be able to recognize the truth. Social media requires that you are truthful across all platforms, not just putting up a veneer or a front. This is your voice that resonates across social media. The person you display on social media should reflect the person you are in real life. Let's strive to align who we are in real life with the person we created on our Twitter and Facebook accounts. We are a generation who will quickly hop into someone's mentions when they say something racist, sexist, or homophobic, but lack that same confidence when someone says something similar in school, work or at home. We know what is the right thing to do and we have witnessed how much influence we have on media discourse when we rally around a cause (Black Lives Matter). Our social media profiles are an extension of our identities; however, we must remain aware of the fact that they are carefully constructed to promote the image of ourselves that we want to be seen by the public.
