Humans Need Social Media

Sherry Turkle and Jane McGonigal once stated that we as humans thrive on nothing more than the physical aspect behind social media and video games. We as humans want to be a part of something bigger and better and we want to leave a mark on this world. We are the generation that is attached and connected to our technology and without out technology, we would be nothing. We need the reassurance that we are liked in this community. People are constantly needing to check their phones to see whether they have a text or not or just because they thought they heard their phone go off. They thrive on the satisfaction that someone is wanting to text or call them. A lot of the time, people going without social media say that they have anxiety. Turkle …show more content…
They want to feel apart of something and video games seem to be able to give them that feeling. People want their lives to matter and have meaning in them. “Meaning is something we’re all looking for more of: more ways to make a difference in the bigger picture, more chances to leave a lasting mark on the world, more moments of awe and wonder at the scale of the projects and communities we’re a part of” (446). When people die, they want you to remember what they did for this community and how it impacted others. They want to be able to say that they “left their mark on the world.” When people feel that sense of self-worth, it is said that they are in awe, which is a unique emotion because it inspires us to do good, not just feel good. The emotions that this game provokes is said to be unbelievable. “Halo proves that you can have a shooter game with a story that really means something. It draws you in and makes you feel like your part of something bigger” (451). Man-made structures have given humans the confidence and abilities to be able to build something on their own and leave a mark on the world. They seem inspired to work towards a goal and achieve greatness with others while learning cooperative behaviors and teamwork. “They are ready to work together on extreme scales, toward epic goals, just for the spine-tingling joy of it. And the more we seek out that kind of happiness …show more content…
Their big idea is the fact that people want to be apart of something bigger. With these two authors, we can see that social media has a huge impact on our lives and how it dictates a lot of our time and energy. People are becoming so attached to technology that we can only hope that one day, they will drop their technology and be a part of something bigger outside this technology-loving

There are now webcams, cell phones, Facebook, and many other forms of communication. I have already experienced this in my daily life. You hardly see people talking anymore, just look around when you go to a restaurant or walk around the mall. We forgot the importance of human interaction, and rely on technology more than anything else.…

The article “Head in the (Instagrammed) Clouds,” written by Isabel H. Evans, reminds us that life should not be controlled by technology. To introduce her idea, Evans talks about our necessity to get likes and shares on our posts and comments to make ourselves feel loved and warm. Next, Blackwell explained how we justify spending time plugged in because we either want to avoid doing something we don't like or we are trying to pass the time. Blackwell concludes by stating that we need to refocus our efforts on gaining accomplishments in real life that we can physically touch and see rather than attaining accomplishments through our…

Technology and Social media are a great deal in many communities as they create different kinds of bonds and relationships between people. Arlie Russell Hochschild in her essay “From The Frying Pan into The Fire”, she discusses the effect of capitalism and technology on the modern American family and how people spend more time at work than at home. She also talks about how families lost the ideal family life to the fragmented and hurried working life style. It’s easier to connect to a video game that tries to tap into the emotions of its players than to one that is focused solely on just, well, being a fun pastime. When a video game is more than a video game, it leaves a mark on you. It becomes an experience. In the words of Andrew Ryan, "We all make choices in life, but in the end our choices make us." The developers’ choice to create an impactful game not only made them who they are, but they affected each and every player who sat down and took the time to immerse themselves within it.…
