The use of social media has become prevalent in the lives of many due to advances in technology, its accessibility and usability. Kaplan and Haenlein (2010) state that social media “is a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of User Generated Content” (p. 61). Social media enables users to communicate and share content freely and independently. Examples of social media platforms include social networking sites such as Facebook, sites that can be used to share videos such as YouTube, microblogging sites such as Twitter, etc. (Whiting & Williams, 2013). Research into the use of social media conducted by Perrin (2015) indicated that in 2015, 65% of American adults used social networking sites compared to 7% in 2005. These figures suggest that there has been a great increase in social media activity among users within recent years; thus, transforming the information seeking behaviors and the platforms used to disseminate information. Librarians and information professionals are now provided with an opportunity to capitalize on the popularity and accessibility of social media to communicate and disseminate information to users.
