Social Media And The Feminist Movement

Improved Essays
It's not any new information that majority of people go online. It's almost impossible to avoid what's happening in the world around you. You see this movement being promoted on all kinds of social media, Feminism. This is not an attack I promise. Feminism is really misunderstood because extremist give kind people a bad name making people that aren't educated about this topic less likely encourage the movement.

The “feminist” belittling men aren't getting their point across on a positive note.“To me, the feminazis do not accurately represent the feminist movement. They have also spurred the creation of the Meninist group, which is a group of men who are taking a stand against feminism.”(HC)They even have women supporting the Meninist movement.

But, Since people are afraid of the word “feminist” these are the results. “According to the poll, only one-fifth of Americans identify as feminists. What’s interesting is that in the same poll, 82 percent of Americans believe that men and women should be equal. So it’s not the ideas of feminism that are the problem, it’s the word feminism itself.”(TS) The feminist community can be really kind. “If you Google “feminist activists,” you will learn about what women and men all over the world have done and are doing to advance the equality between women and men and to stop violence against women.” (TS) Even Beyonce is apart of this movement spreading great messages. “If feminism becomes more visible in the media and in popular culture, I think people’s perceptions surrounding it would change.” (TS) Unfortunately that is how things work because if it isn't cool nobody wants to know about …show more content…
What feminism means and stands for is sex and gender equality, but this is ignored while the negative perception of feminism takes the spotlight.”(TS) An example that shows there are people out there that would support the movement if they weren't categorized with the same extreme feminist. “When asked why they are not feminists, the most common response 40% is that 'feminists are too extreme', followed by 'feminists are anti-men' 18%. 11% of non-feminists are not feminists because they believe men and women are not equal.” (TYG) Of course not everybody is about equality and not everybody is a humble feminist, I get it, but for as much as our generation is on their phones they can take a few minutes to support good movements around us in real life. “It looks like most people are still allergic to the f-word. In a culture where feminism seems to be gaining momentum, a new poll appears to contradict that notion, showing that only 18 percent of Americans consider themselves feminists. However, 85 percent claimed they believe in equality for women.”(NYT) ---“People need to take the time to do some research about what feminism really means. Instead of accepting society’s negative view of it, learning about feminism and the activists who support it will help to replace the misconceptions and hate.”

Feminism is not a local movement, but instead, feminism is an international movement. Many citizens are not aware of how women’s rights are far more progressive towards equality within other countries compare to the United States, therefore, demonstrating the United States is truly in a culture lag. This being said, the negative concept towards feminism in the United States is focusing more on a local microscopic than the macroscopic of feminism as a global movement. Throughout history, women have fought for basic human rights for everyone and equality for all, but somehow, the name of feminism has been made into a more derogatory term that most other modern offensive words. Instead of being labeled a feminist being seen as a good thing in the eyes of women, some have sided with some men on the issue and determined that being labeled a feminist is an insult. While there are many more men and women that now are self-identified feminists, there seems to be more backlash and hatred for what some young men will call “femi-Nazis” because of their “hatred of men” and their intention to “switch the roles and make men the subservient ones” which is clearly not the intentions of the feminists. While the word feminism…

This is probably the biggest yet most common misconception about feminism. Feminists do not hate men, but they do hate misogyny. The Oxford Dictionary defines misogyny as “Dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women”. Though feminists do not deny the existence of misandrist (hatred of men), a small percentage of misandrists are the main cause for Feminism getting a bad…

Modern-day feminists are not beneficial to our society or women by being an embarrassment to first and second-wave feminists, expecting special treatment, and turning anything into an insult. While many people are convinced that modern feminism is making a profitable effect on women in our community, there are a large majority of people who think quite the opposite. Feminism used to be about actual issues regarding gender inequality that many women in the first and second-wave of feminism faced before the 1980s; such as voting rights, property rights, and reproductive rights. Third and fourth-wave feminists focus more on unimportant and irrelevant issues, such as women’s gender role expectations, stereotypes, and intersectionality. Feminists’…

Feminism is often viewed as a negative in our society as it is viewed as a group who are hateful towards men out of spite. The truth is that feminism has been wrongly accused of this from time to time as well as been abused by malicious people for their own gain. The true definition of Feminism as labeled by the video “ This is What Feminism Looks Like” is that it is a state of mind where humans just want to be treated equally. There is no mention of hate, only justice which is something which we all fight for. It’s an equality which feminism fights for and hopes to achieve even though all the misconceptions are against it as well as those use it in a faulty manner.…

In the reading Feminism is for Everybody, bell hooks declares feminism as “a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression” (hooks, vii). Although this is a very simple and direct answer to the question of “what is feminism?” there is more to the question than the simple and laid out answer. By starting with what feminism is not, coming to an answer of what is feminism becomes much clearer.…

Thus, for feminists to be anti-male, they technically wouldn't even be feminists. We don't believe we're better than men or that we deserve more rights than men. We want to be treated the same way. Being in the third wave of feminism, women have already gained basic rights through the movement of the first and second waves. However, we are still fighting for things like diminishing the gender pay gap.…

Unlike feminism, the ‘menimist’ movement isn’t focused on helping people, but rather poking fun at gender roles and shaming feminists. The ‘menimist’ movement has its own Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr accounts and posts jokes such as “I hate it when people say ‘women should always be in the kitchen’… how are they supposed to clean the rest of the house?” (@MeninistTweet, 2015). While many may consider this to be funny other posts by the page are more threatening and misogynistic than others. This behaviour affects the feminist movement as it turns the movement into a joke.…

It started in the mid-2000s and with the rise of “social justice warriors,” feminism is more prevalent now than ever before. Social justice warriors are found online to spread feminist values throughout the World Wide Web. There are forums and discussion boards where feminists can gather to call out sexist media and argue to have it removed. The more radical fourth-waver have also been called “feminazis” for their overbearing presence of shoving their beliefs down others throats. Feminism can be a peculiar word, plenty of people tend to misinterpret the word when it is used and a lot of people, mostly men, tend to get defensive when the word is mentioned and they have their reasons. Unfortunately, we live in a world where women get treated very differently than men. Throughout the history women have struggled against gender discrimination in all aspects of life, whether it is economically, politically, or socially. Equality with men is what the women always want/wanted but, it was always extremely difficult to achieve for women, that’s why a lot of women dedicated their lives to help one day achieve equality for all the women in the world.…

Anyone who is living in the 21st century has heard of the movements of gender equality and feminism. This topic of interest has been around for awhile, and is making a huge comeback. When thinking about gender discrimination, our minds naturally assume that women are the ones being discriminated against. That assumption is wrong, men and women are equally stereotyped into roles of masculinity vs. femininity. In order to fight for gender equality, we have to understand what gender equality is, and why feminism isn 't just for women.…

One thing that is absolute, this message of feminism must stop. Feminism is not an excuse for women to become the gener suppressor, but it is a strive for gender equality. However, as Meryl Streep has proven by calling herself a humanist instead of a feminist, it 's not the word that matters, it 's the message. Just because the word is so commonly associated with women, gender inequality is a problem for men just as it is with women. Men suffer from social injustices just as a women does.…
