The empirical research is focused to answer the thesis that “advancements in social media have affected political polarization between liberals and conservatives in the past ten years. To try to examine the effect polarized social media outlets have on politically active adults. Who also identify as either conservative or liberal. Understanding the political divide in the United States and how social media has consequentially contributed to the width, we hope to understand what is really causing the push of differing political ideals. There are trends through examining research from government agencies and pew research survey’s, that divisiveness within political ideas is on the rise. In hopes of creating a template for future research and understanding of social media outlets, such as, Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat. The research will better explain the differences between liberal and conservative users. Previous research on this topic has brought many important factors in determining if social media has played a role in political polarization in the United Sates.
